Mumbai Rains: Two Killed, 26 Tree Falls, 15 Short Circuits
The heavy rains that lashed Mumbai on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, caused widespread flooding and waterlogging, and also led to two deaths, 26 incidents of tree fall, and 15 short circuits.
The rains began on Tuesday morning and continued into Wednesday, with the heaviest downpour occurring in the afternoon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast heavy rains for Mumbai and the surrounding areas, and the city received more than 100 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours.
The rains caused widespread flooding and waterlogging in many parts of Mumbai, including the city's financial district, Nariman Point. Several roads and bridges were submerged, and traffic came to a standstill in many areas. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had to shut down several subways and underpasses due to the flooding.
The rains also caused two deaths. A 38-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on him in Malad, and a 30-year-old man was killed when a wall collapsed in Goregaon. In addition, 26 incidents of tree fall were reported across the city, and 15 short circuits were reported.
The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) had deployed its disaster management teams to deal with the aftermath of the rains. The teams were working to clear the debris caused by the tree falls and short circuits, and to pump out the water that had accumulated in low-lying areas.
The IMD has forecast more rains for Mumbai in the next 24 hours. The city has been placed on an orange alert, which means that heavy rains are expected. The BMC has advised residents to be cautious and to avoid venturing out unless necessary.
