PM Modi speaks on Uniform Civil Code while addressing BJP workers
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday pitched for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying that it is the need of the hour for a "modern India". He also slammed the opposition for opposing the UCC, calling it a "vote-bank politics".
Addressing BJP workers in Bhopal, Modi said that the UCC is not about imposing one religion's law on another, but about ensuring that all citizens are treated equally under the law.
"A Uniform Civil Code is not about imposing one religion's law on another. It is about ensuring that all citizens are treated equally under the law," he said. "This is the need of the hour for a modern India."
Modi also accused the opposition of opposing the UCC for "vote-bank politics".
"Those who oppose the UCC are only doing so because they are afraid of losing their vote banks," he said. "They do not want to see a modern India where all citizens are treated equally under the law."
The UCC is a contentious issue in India, with some people arguing that it is necessary to ensure equality among all citizens, while others argue that it would violate the religious freedom of certain communities.
The BJP has been a vocal proponent of the UCC, and Modi's speech on Sunday is seen as a sign that the government is serious about pursuing the issue. It is unclear when the government will introduce a UCC bill in Parliament, but Modi's speech has certainly put the issue back on the agenda.
